Saumya Sharma, who was serving as the CEO of Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL), has now been appointed as the Municipal Commissioner of Amravati. She takes over from Sachin Kalantre, who has been transferred to Pune as the Deputy Director of Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (YASHADA).
Sachin Kalantre had been serving as the Amravati Municipal Commissioner and Administrator for the past two years. During his tenure, he successfully implemented several key projects, even while dealing with financial challenges.
Saumya Sharma was appointed as the CEO of Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL) in August 2024, taking over from Prithviraj B.P., who had left the post three months earlier.
Before taking over as NSSCDCL CEO, Saumya Sharma served as the CEO of Nagpur Zilla Parishad. The appointment of non-IAS officers to the post of Amravati Municipal Commissioner has been a matter of controversy. In June 2024, the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court noted that such appointments go against legal rules, as the position of Municipal Commissioner must be held by an IAS officer.
The State Chief Secretary was instructed by the court to submit an affidavit clarifying the appointment of non-IAS officers. Sachin Kalantre was named Amravati Municipal Commissioner on June 30, 2024, following the promotion of former commissioner Devidas Pawar to Additional Commissioner of the Amravati Division. Kalantre’s appointment was notable, as he was the first IAS officer to assume this role after N Naveen Sona.
