The Indian government has introduced a new FASTag Annual Pass for frequent highway travelers. Starting August 15, private car users can pay a flat fee of ₹3,000 for the whole year and save on toll charges across national highways. Announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, this scheme aims to make travel more affordable and hassle-free.
How will it benefit you? How can you buy it? What is its validity? Which trips are covered? We’ve explained all the key points in simple terms in this article.
What Is the FASTag Annual Pass?
The FASTag Annual Pass lets private car owners travel on national highways without paying tolls for every trip. By paying a one-time fee of ₹3,000, users get 200 trips or 1 year of toll access — whichever comes first. Once the limit is reached, the pass expires and your FASTag returns to regular mode.
Where and How to Buy It
You can buy the pass through:
- The Rajmarg Yatra mobile app, or
- The NHAI website
Just enter your vehicle details, ensure your FASTag is active, and pay ₹3,000 online. Once done, the pass is linked to your existing FASTag.
Can I Use My Current FASTag?
Yes! If your FASTag is active, linked to your vehicle’s registration number, and not blacklisted, it will work for the Annual Pass.
Which Toll Booths Are Covered?
The pass is valid only on toll booths located on:
- National Highways (NH)
- National Expressways (NE)
It does not work on state highways, private roads, or tolls managed by state governments.
Validity of the Pass
It is valid for 1 year from the activation date or 200 trips, whichever comes first.
What Happens After the Limit Is Over?
Once you reach 200 trips or complete one year, your FASTag will switch back to regular mode. You can buy a new pass anytime after that.
Who Can Use the Pass?
Only private vehicles like cars, jeeps, or vans used for personal (non-commercial) purposes are eligible. Commercial vehicles are not allowed.
Can I Transfer It to Another Vehicle?
No. The pass is linked to the FASTag on one vehicle and cannot be transferred.
Is the FASTag Required to Be Fixed on the Windshield?
Yes. Your FASTag must be properly attached to your vehicle’s windshield and linked with the registration number. It won’t work if it’s loose or incorrectly installed.
Can I Get the Pass If My FASTag Has Only a Chassis Number?
No. You must first update it with your vehicle’s registration number (VRN) to be eligible.
What Counts as One Trip?
- Each crossing through a toll booth counts as one trip.
- A round trip (going and returning) counts as two trips.
- For entry-exit toll systems, a full journey is considered one trip.
Will I Get Updates?
Yes. You’ll receive SMS alerts about your pass on the mobile number linked to your FASTag.
Is the Annual Pass Mandatory?
No, it’s optional. If you prefer, you can continue paying tolls per trip with your regular FASTag.
Can I Buy a New Pass Before the Year Ends?
Yes. If you use all 200 trips early, you can buy a new Annual Pass immediately.
Why Is the FASTag Annual Pass Useful?
This pass is designed for frequent highway travelers. It can help save up to ₹7,000 a year and makes toll payments easier and more convenient.
