In a remarkable display of clinical expertise and multidisciplinary coordination, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the 1020-bedded Shalinitai Meghe Hospital & Research Centre (SMHRC) has successfully managed a rare and life-threatening obstetric emergency. The result: the joyous recovery and discharge of a young mother and her newborn, both safe and stable—an inspiring testament to SMHRC’s steadfast commitment to quality, compassionate healthcare.
A 26-year-old woman, 32 weeks into pregnancy, was urgently brought to the 300 bedded dedicated Shalinitai Mother & Child Division of SMHRC from Takalghat, in a highly critical condition. She was suffering from eclampsia and had suffered a cardiac arrest due to aspiration, following a reported lapse in antihypertensive treatment.
Swift and decisive action by Dr. Snehal Deshmukh (Gynecologist) and Dr. Priyanka Kangale (Anesthetist) in the labor room initiated timely resuscitation, successfully stabilizing the patient. She was immediately taken for an emergency high-risk Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS), performed by Dr. Snehal Deshmukh, Dr. Shashwati Ghosh, and Dr. Shantanu Shembalkar under the guidance of Dr. Rajasi Sengupta, HOD – OBGY, with critical anesthesia support by Dr. Priyanka Kangale.
Post-operatively, the mother faced a cascade of rare complications—Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES), Cerebral Venous Thrombosis, and Peripartum Cardiomyopathy. The situation demanded continued, collaborative, and expert intervention across specialties.
Under the leadership of Dr. Hemant Deshpande and Dr. Rakesh Bhaisare, the Critical Care Team—including Dr. Rahul Daga, Dr. Samruddhi Tayade, Dr. Anitabh Sukhdeve, Dr. Amit Suthar, and Dr. Masum Biranjan—provided round-the-clock intensive care. The Anesthesia Team, led by Dr. Anjali Borkar (HOD – Anesthesia), ensured seamless perioperative support.
Neurological complications were expertly managed by Dr. Jivan Kinkar (Neurologist), while cardiac care was steered by Dr. Abhay Tidke and Dr. Rahul Barai (Cardiologists), who developed a customized treatment strategy for her peripartum cardiomyopathy.
Simultaneously, the newborn received exemplary neonatal support from the Pediatrics Team under the guidance of Dr. C. Bokade (HOD – Pediatrics) and Dr. Kush Jhunjhunwala, ensuring a healthy start to life.
The patient remained under close observation for nearly two months. Through meticulous monitoring, intensive support, and coordinated interventions, she was gradually weaned off ventilator support and eventually discharged—conscious, ambulatory, and in stable condition—bringing immense joy to her family and profound satisfaction to the care team.
Exceptional nursing and paramedical care played a pivotal role throughout her recovery. Under the leadership of Dr. Seema Singh (Nursing Director) and Sr. Vishakha Moon (ANS), nursing staff including Sr. Sushma Sen, Sr. Bhagyashree, Sr. Pritika, Sr. Jyoti, and others extended relentless, compassionate care, ensuring holistic recovery.
The patient’s family expressed deep gratitude to the entire SMHRC team for their relentless dedication and empathy.
Dr. Anup Marar, Director, DMIHER (DU) Off-Campus, commended the team, stating:
“This extraordinary case stands as a beacon of what skilled teamwork and a unified approach can achieve. It underscores the strength of interdepartmental collaboration and the deep-rooted culture of clinical excellence at SMHRC. It is cases like these that inspire us to raise the bar in every patient journey.”
Dr. Vasant Gawande, Chief Medical Superintendent, SMHRC, added:
“The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in SMHRC has, within just five years, established a solid reputation for handling complex, high-risk cases round-the-clock. The ever-growing number of successful deliveries at our facility is a reflection of this dedication and the unwavering support from our allied departments.”
This extraordinary success story is a shining example of SMHRC’s vision in action: “Delivering hope through expertise, compassion, and innovation.”
