Nagpur: In a fresh bid to boost its revenue, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced an amnesty scheme offering an 80% rebate on outstanding dues exclusively for licensees. The scheme, which came into effect on June 16, will remain open until September 30.
Under the initiative, license holders of NMC-owned shops and market properties are urged to clear their outstanding rent and the current year’s dues. In return, the penalty amount on delayed payments will be completely waived.
The scheme comes in response to long-standing rent defaults by many licensees, which have significantly inflated over time due to compounding penalties. The civic body has been struggling to recover these dues, as the stiff penalties have deterred defaulters from settling payments.
“Since rent recovery has become challenging, this limited-period offer aims to recover at least a portion of the dues,” said Milind Meshram, Deputy Commissioner (Revenue). The official order for the scheme was issued following instructions from Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari.
Despite past amnesty schemes yielding limited success, the civic administration hopes the substantial rebate and penalty waiver will encourage higher compliance this time around. With property tax being a key source of internal revenue, NMC officials are banking on the scheme to ease financial pressures.
