Nagpur: In a major step toward creating a drug-free society, the Nagpur City Police on Tuesday destroyed narcotics worth over ₹1.32 crore as part of “Operation Thunder – Let’s Unite for a Drug-Free Society”, an initiative launched under the guidance of Commissioner of Police Ravinder Kumar Singal.
This action comes ahead of International Anti-Drugs Day, observed globally on June 26, and is part of a week-long awareness campaign being run across the city from June 20 to June 26. The campaign includes anti-drug operations, public awareness drives, and community outreach programs.
On June 24, seized narcotics from 54 criminal cases registered at various police stations in Nagpur were destroyed at Maharashtra Enviro Limited, an MPCB-authorized waste management facility located in MIDC Butibori. The contraband included Mephedrone (MD), ganja, charas, and doda powder, collectively weighing 714.230 kilograms.
The total value of the destroyed substances was estimated at ₹1,32,39,000. The disposal was carried out in accordance with MPCB norms and under the supervision of the Narcotics Disposal Committee.
To raise awareness among the youth about the dangers of drug abuse, students from schools and colleges were invited to witness the disposal process. Officers explained the harmful impact of narcotics on health and society, emphasizing the need to stay away from such substances.
The destruction process was carried out in the presence of several senior officials, including:
• Vasant Pardeshi, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime)
• Rahul Makanikar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection)
• Ashwini Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters)
• Mahadev Bharasakde, Deputy Superintendent, State Crime Investigation Department
• Prashant Maske, Manager, Maharashtra Enviro Ltd.
• Inspector Patil, Pollution Control Board
• PI Gajanan Gulhane, Head of the Anti-Narcotics Cell, Crime Branch, and his team
This large-scale disposal underscores the Nagpur Police’s continued efforts to curb the drug menace and promote a safer, addiction-free society.
