Amid growing speculation and media reports claiming that toll charges for two-wheelers might be introduced from July 15, the Government of India has stepped in to set the record straight. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has firmly denied these claims, calling them “baseless” and confirming that there is no such proposal under active consideration.
Amid circulating reports claiming that two-wheelers would soon require FASTag to pay tolls at highway entry points, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has refuted the information. On Thursday, NHAI issued a clarification through its official social media handles and other channels, stating, “Some sections of the media have reported that the Government of India plans to levy user fees on two-wheelers. NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers.”
This clarification comes in response to viral news articles and social media posts that claimed a FASTag-based toll system would be extended to motorcycles and scooters beginning mid-July. The reports also mentioned potential toll fee structures and FASTag placement mechanisms for two-wheelers-none of which have been validated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) or NHAI.

What Caused the Confusion?
Several media outlets recently reported that starting July 15, the government might begin charging toll fees for two-wheelers and make FASTags mandatory for bikes and scooters. These reports were based on talks about introducing a unified toll system and improving highway toll collections. However, there has been no official notification confirming such a move. As a result, the news created panic and confusion among two-wheeler users across the country.
The Reality: No Toll for Two-Wheelers
At present, two-wheelers do not have to pay tolls on most national and state highways in India. This policy helps keep travel affordable for everyday commuters and also reduces traffic at toll plazas. Importantly, there has been no official gazette notification, draft policy change, or public notice suggesting that tolls for two-wheelers are being introduced.
Any change in toll policy must be officially announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and published in the Gazette of India. So far, that has not happened.
Is FASTag Mandatory for Two-Wheelers?
As of now, FASTags are not required for two-wheelers. There is no toll fee being collected from motorcycles or scooters on national highways, and there are no plans in motion to change that anytime soon.
If any such policy change is made in the future, it will be shared publicly through an official notification.
Despite viral social media posts and misleading headlines, there is no truth to the claims that FASTags will become mandatory for two-wheelers starting July 15, 2025.
But for now two-wheelers continue to travel toll-free, and no FASTag is required. Commuters are urged to follow official government updates and avoid misinformation.
