A young woman studying at a college in Kolkata has filed a police complaint alleging that two senior students and a former student sexually assaulted her on campus. The incident reportedly took place on the evening of June 25, when she had gone to the college for academic work.
According to her statement to the police, the three accused took her to a room and raped her. The woman lodged the complaint at the Kasba Police Station, after which all three suspects were arrested on Thursday night.
What the Complaint States
The woman told police she visited South Calcutta Law College around noon on June 25 to complete some exam-related formalities. She waited inside the college union room for some time. Later, she alleged, one of the accused instructed that the college’s main gate be locked. She said she was then taken to the security guard’s room, where the assault occurred between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM.
Arrests and Investigation
The three arrested individuals have been identified as:
Monojit Mishra (31): A former student of the college and currently associated with the student wing of the Trinamool Congress (TMCP).
Zaib Ahmed (19): A first-year student at the college.
Pramit Mukherjee (20): Another current student of the college.
Mishra and Ahmed were arrested from a road crossing in Kasba on Thursday evening, while Mukherjee was taken into custody later that night from his residence around 12:30 AM. Police have also seized their mobile phones as part of the investigation.
Doctors are currently examining the survivor, and the case is being treated as a top priority by police, who have said the investigation is ongoing and more evidence will be collected.
Context and Concern
This incident comes less than a year after a similarly horrific crime in the city, in which a postgraduate medical student at RG Kar Medical College was raped and murdered. In that case, a 33-year-old civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, Sanjay Roy, was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The recent incident has once again raised serious concerns about campus safety and the need for strict enforcement of law and order in educational institutions.
