A sudden and intense spell of rainfall turned a key stretch of the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway into a waterlogged nightmare on Tuesday, bringing vehicular traffic to a complete halt near the Sabra-Fardapur interchange in Buldhana district.
The downpour, which resembled a cloudburst, severely affected Mehkar taluka, where heavy waterlogging under a bridge on the expressway led to long queues of stranded vehicles. Many vehicles stalled as water entered their engines, causing massive traffic disruptions along the Mehkar-Khamgaon route.
The impact extended beyond the highway. Vast agricultural lands were inundated, with early-sown crops submerged under floodwaters, resulting in heavy losses for farmers. Several villages along the expressway and nearby fields were submerged as rainwater overflowed into low-lying areas.
The situation escalated further as the Pench River swelled dangerously due to the continuous downpour, flooding riverside villages and displacing several families. Local authorities are also investigating reports that a youth may have been swept away in Mehkar town, although official confirmation is awaited.
Disaster management teams and local administration have been deployed to assess damages and restore normalcy, as monsoon rains continue to batter parts of Maharashtra.
