In a major infrastructure boost for eastern Maharashtra, a six-lane expressway is set to significantly cut down travel time between Nagpur and Gondia. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will build the 163-kilometre expressway at an estimated cost of ₹21,670 crore.
Currently, the journey from Nagpur to Gondia takes approximately 3.5 hours due to traffic congestion and speed limitations in towns and villages along the route. Once completed, the new expressway will reduce this travel time to just two hours.
This high-speed corridor will serve as an extension of the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway and will feature similar design and infrastructure standards. According to MSRDC officials, the expressway will originate from Gavsi Manapur village on Wardha Road near Jamtha, where it intersects with the Outer Ring Road. The starting point of the Samruddhi Mahamarg at Shivmadka lies just 5 to 6 km from this location.
The expressway will span 145 km from Gavsi Manapur to Sawari village near Gondia city. From there, commuters will be able to enter the city. In comparison, the current highway route via Bhandara covers around 161 km.
In addition to the main stretch, the project includes a 14 km connector to Tiroda and a 4 km bypass road near Gondia, bringing the total project length to approximately 163 km.
For the construction, MSRDC will need to acquire around 1,600 hectares of land, primarily in Gondia district, followed by Nagpur and Bhandara districts. A joint land measurement survey is currently underway in all three districts and is expected to conclude by the end of July.
Once the land acquisition process nears completion, MSRDC will issue tenders for the project. Construction is expected to begin after the tendering process, with contractors being allotted a completion period of 30 months.
