To give Nagpur railway station a world-class makeover, construction work is already in progress at both the eastern and western entry points. Now, the focus is shifting to the platforms. A modern elevated concourse is set to be built, extending from platform number 1 to 7.
According to the railway administration, foundation work for the elevated concourse will begin from platform number 7 on July 4. The project will be carried out by Girdharilal Construction Company and overseen by the Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA).
Currently, Nagpur railway station has two foot overbridges (FOBs) located at the Itarsi and Mumbai ends. The upcoming elevated concourse, designed to serve as a modern FOB, will be constructed in the space between these two bridges. The concourse will span a total width of 108 metres, featuring a 27-metre-wide walkway for passengers. It will also be equipped with modern seating on both sides, along with lifts and escalators for added convenience.
To enable this development, initial foundation work will begin on platform number 7, which will remain closed for 52 days. Additionally, a new ramp will be built in the Itarsi direction, directly opposite the current ramp at the Itarsi end.
After the work on platform 7 is completed, construction will move to platforms 4 or 5, then to platforms 2 or 3, and finally to platform 1. Pillars will be built on the newly laid foundations, followed by the installation of girders and casting of the concourse slab. Once the new structure is fully completed, the existing foot overbridges may either be dismantled or replaced with updated ones.
Passenger Disruption to Be Minimal
Despite the 52-day closure of platform number 7 for construction, only three trains will be diverted to Ajni station. As a result, most train services will continue as usual, causing minimal disruption to passengers. However, commuters from certain parts of the city might find it slightly difficult to access Ajni station, especially during the ongoing monsoon period.
