Once considered the bustling commercial hub of Nagpur, Sitabuldi is now grappling with growing traffic mismanagement and an uncontrolled autorickshaw menace. According to a media report, the stretch from Variety Square to Jhansi Rani Square paints a stark contrast to the city’s ‘smart city’ tag, with traffic regulations routinely ignored and civic order steadily deteriorating.
Throughout the day, this half-kilometre stretch becomes a hotspot of congestion and frustration. Autorickshaws line the roads haphazardly, with many drivers waiting indefinitely for passengers, often obstructing the free flow of vehicles. The lack of enforcement and regulation has turned the area into a daily struggle for commuters and pedestrians alike.
Add to this the presence of city buses sometimes two or three at once jostling for space in the same narrow lane. Then mix in a stream of cars, two-wheelers squeezing through whatever gaps they can find, and pedestrians crossing from every direction some at zebra crossings, many not. Just ten minutes at Variety Square paints a vivid picture of this urban chaos. The air is filled with honking, raised voices, sudden braking, and near collisions.
And the authorities? Silent spectators. Traffic police are nowhere in sight, and the civic body appears completely disengaged. The result is predictable: Sitabuldi, once a symbol of commercial energy with its bustling markets, metro access, and thousands of daily visitors, has now descended into a commuter’s nightmare.
The congestion isn’t accidental it’s the result of a system gone unchecked. Autorickshaw drivers have turned public roads into personal parking spaces. Shopkeepers allow customers to leave vehicles on footpaths and roadsides without concern, while the administration looks the other way, allowing the chaos to fester.
And the disorder doesn’t stop at Variety Square. Just a few metres ahead at Jhansi Rani Square, the situation worsens. Rows of shops crowd the left side, their patrons’ two-wheelers and cars parked carelessly, shrinking the usable road to a congested strip. Adding to the gridlock, autorickshaws queue up once again, with no fear of consequences, choking the stretch even further.
The stretch from Jhansi Rani Square back to Variety Square offers no respite. It’s the same chaotic pattern vehicles parked along the road, autorickshaws idling without concern, footpaths taken over, and commuters visibly agitated. Pedestrians are left to fend for themselves, dodging traffic and danger with every step.
The scene near Hindi Mor Bhavan is no different. Rickshaws occupy every available space with impunity, buses struggle to make safe stops, and pedestrians, risking life and limb, are forced to weave through the disorder.
Sitabuldi needs proper traffic rules in action fixed places for rickshaws, no-parking zones near shops, safe footpaths, and regular traffic police. Without this, the daily mess will keep troubling people who walk, work, and travel here every day.
