All schools in Maharashtra will remain closed on July 8 and 9 as thousands of teachers and non-teaching staff go on strike over the state government’s failure to fulfill long-pending demands related to grants and benefits. Parents and students have been advised to take note of the statewide closure.
According to a media report, the protest has been called by employees of aided and partially aided schools, who allege that repeated government assurances have not translated into action. The decision to close schools is expected to disrupt academic schedules across the state.
Last year, a 75-day protest by teachers began on August 1, 2024, seeking increased financial aid for aided schools. While the government responded positively at the time, no funds were included in the government resolution (GR) issued on October 14, 2024, leading to renewed frustration.
The current unrest stems from a promise made during a cabinet meeting on October 10, 2024, where the then Chief Minister had assured that the next installment of grants would be released. However, with no progress over the past year, teachers’ associations have decided to protest once again.
On July 8 and 9, thousands of teachers will gather at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan for a large-scale demonstration, demanding immediate action.
The agitation has received full support from the Maharashtra State Headmasters’ Association, the Joint Headmasters’ Association, and various teachers’ unions. Leaders have warned that the protest may intensify if the government fails to respond promptly, potentially causing further disruption to the education system.
