The Maharashtra State Secondary and Higher Secondary Physical Education Teachers’ Association has demanded that the District Sports Office (DSO) restrict students from Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools from participating in its sports competitions.
Citing a recent development, association officials pointed out that during the 68th annual general body meeting of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), CBSE was granted affiliation as a separate unit. This makes CBSE eligible to conduct its own independent sports competitions under SGFI.
However, during the 2024–25 session, it was observed that several CBSE students represented both the Maharashtra state team and the CBSE unit in SGFI tournaments, thereby gaining an unfair advantage of participating in two events. In contrast, students from the state board are permitted to compete in only one event, as they cannot participate in CBSE competitions.
Terming the situation unjust, the association emphasized that state board students are being deprived of significant benefits such as grace marks, SGFI certificates, and up to five percent reservation in government jobs that come with participation.
To address this disparity, a delegation from the association met MLC Sandip Joshi on Monday and submitted a memorandum, urging him to raise the issue in the ongoing monsoon session of the Maharashtra Assembly.
The delegation comprised association president Padmakar Charmode, secretary Vishal Lokhande, joint secretary Sachin Deshmukh, Nagpur City president Ashfaq Sheikh, and members Pankaj Karpe, Vaibhav Kumre, Saurabh Dubey, among others.
