Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday reviewed the heavy rainfall situation in Nagpur, where severe waterlogging has been reported. According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the situation is currently under control, as per a report by a news agency.
In a post on X, the CMO Maharashtra said, “Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today reviewed the rainfall situation in Nagpur city-district with the Nagpur District Collector, Nagpur Municipal Corporation Commissioner, and Police Commissioner. The situation is currently under control.”
CMO confirmed that teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are on standby to respond to any emergency situations.
“However, NDRF and SDRF teams have been kept ready to handle any situation. Considering the warning of heavy rainfall, the district administration has declared a holiday for schools in the district today,” the CMO added.
“Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has appealed to citizens to take safety precautions,” the Chief Minister’s Office said in a post on X.
As per media report, flooding continues to trouble residents in New Narsala, one of the worst-hit areas in Nagpur. A local resident told a news agency, “Water has filled up to the waist. Cars have drowned. Water has entered the house. I have been living here for the last 7-8 years, and the same situation occurs here every year when it rains.”
Another resident added, “This area has been severely waterlogged for the last three days. It is not possible to come and go from here. The entire road is blocked. Houses and cars are completely submerged.”
In response, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) launched rescue operations using a raft in the locality, where several homes and vehicles remain underwater due to relentless rain. The NMC’s City Operation Centre monitored the affected areas through CCTV cameras and fielded distress calls from residents.
Tushar Barahate, NMC’s Chief Fire and Disaster Management Officer, stated, “Nagpur received heavy rainfall, causing waterlogging in the city. We have received 40-50 calls over this, and five-seven trees have fallen. A report of people being stuck has also been received, for which we have started a rescue operation.” He added, “Dewatering pumps are being used to reduce the water.”
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Nagpur until Friday, forecasting “heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorm.”
