Amid swirling floodwaters and rising panic in Nagpur’s Narsala area on Wednesday, a powerful image emerged: a man, chest-deep in water, hugging his dog tightly as he waded to safety — no rescue team, no boat, just trust and unwavering love.
The man, Dhanraj Vaishwas, had been trapped since morning as torrential rains battered the city with over 240 mm of rainfall in 48 hours. When neighbors urged him to flee, he refused — not without Sheru, his loyal desi dog of five years.
“People told me to run when the water rose, but I couldn’t leave him. He’s my family,” Dhanraj told Lokmat Times, holding back tears.
With a plastic tub in one hand holding basic supplies, and the other arm cradling Sheru, the duo made their way through waist- to chest-high water, surrounded by stunned onlookers. “The way Sheru followed him — calm, trusting — it said everything,” recalled Kiran Meshram, a neighbor.
Sheru, a black-and-white indie rescued from the streets, has now become a local hero. Drenched but dignified, he clung to his human — not out of fear, but faith.
As over 68 emergency rescue calls flooded the NMC control room — especially from Ambazari and Narsala zones — Dhanraj and Sheru reminded the city that not all heroes wear uniforms. Sometimes, they just hold on and keep walking.
