A second-year student of the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C), has been arrested in connection with an alleged rape incident that reportedly took place on the institute’s campus.
The accused, identified as Paramananda Toppaunawar, was taken into custody after a complaint was lodged by the survivor. According to police officials, the woman is not affiliated with the institution and had been invited to the boys’ hostel for what was described as a counselling session.
As per the complaint, the woman was not asked to register her entry in the visitor’s logbook upon arrival. She has alleged that after consuming pizza and water offered to her during the visit, she lost consciousness. The food and drink are suspected to have been laced with sedatives.
When she regained consciousness, she found herself alone inside the hostel premises and alleged that she had been sexually assaulted while unconscious. She further stated that she was physically assaulted when she attempted to resist.
The survivor initially approached Thakurpukur Police Station in Kolkata to file a complaint but was redirected to Haridevpur Police Station, as the IIM-C campus falls under its jurisdiction.
With assistance from officers at Thakurpukur, she reached Haridevpur Police Station on Friday and formally lodged a complaint against the accused student. Following this, police visited the hostel premises, collected evidence, and arrested the accused.
“The incident is being investigated by the police. I can’t comment on anything right now,” said Saibal Chattopadhyay, Director-in-Charge of IIM-Calcutta, when contacted by The New Indian Express.
This case comes shortly after another disturbing incident in the city. On June 25, a gang-rape was reported at South Calcutta Law College. Although the crime occurred on campus, it came to light only on June 27. Based on the survivor’s statement, a student of the college, police arrested three accused individuals. The security guard on duty at the time was also later taken into custody.
