In just three days under an ‘orange alert,’ heavy monsoon rains lashed Nagpur, leaving the entire city struggling to cope. Several areas were hit by intense flooding, and it may be a while before residents fully recover. However, there’s some relief for flood-affected citizens now, as the monsoon clouds have pulled back, giving the city a much-needed break.
According to the Meteorological Department, Nagpur is not expected to receive any significant rainfall until July 17. While the city had recorded only 77.4 mm of rain by June 30, a massive 462.6 mm poured down in just the first 11 days of July — with 385.2 mm falling during the recent three-day spell alone.
The recent downpour has already pushed Nagpur’s rainfall beyond the city’s average for July, which stands at 347.7 mm. By the end of June, the city was facing a rainfall deficit of over 45%. But between July 7 and 9 — during the orange alert — the skies opened up, dumping 285.1 mm of rain and wiping out the shortfall. As a result, Nagpur has already received nearly half of its average monsoon rainfall. Typically, the city records around 1,050 mm of rain over the four-month monsoon season.
Over the past two days, the weather in Nagpur has calmed down, offering much-needed relief. On Friday, the sun was out in full force, giving residents a chance to recover from the recent flood damage. The local administration has also ramped up efforts in sanitation and public health. With clearer skies, the daytime temperature rose by 2.7°C, touching 33.3°C, while the night temperature increased slightly to 24.6°C. Morning humidity was high at 84%, but it dropped to 61% by evening.
A low-pressure area, also called a trough line, has formed from the Arabian Sea to Chhattisgarh. It passes through Gujarat, central Maharashtra, and southern Madhya Pradesh. Since this trough has now moved away from Vidarbha, the region is getting some relief from heavy rain.
Another trough has formed between Uttar Pradesh and the Bay of Bengal, bringing good rainfall to northern states. As the main monsoon system is currently over northern India, Nagpur and Vidarbha are not expected to get heavy rain for now.
