In a major crackdown on narcotics, Bajaj Nagar Police arrested a 23-year-old youth after seizing over 3 kg of ganja from his possession during late-night patrolling on Friday.
The incident took place around 10 PM on July 11, when a police patrol team spotted a man moving suspiciously with a black backpack in front of the Maharashtra Government Office, between Kriplani Chowk and Mata Kacheri Chowk. On being intercepted and questioned, the man identified himself as Rohit Ajit Rangari, a resident of Zade Chowk, near Pani Tanki, Dahi Bazar, Itwari, Nagpur.
Police conducted a search in the presence of independent witnesses and found 3.14 kg of green-colored cannabis (ganja) in the suspect’s bag. The team also seized a mobile phone from his possession. The total value of the recovered contraband and items is estimated at ₹86,000.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused was allegedly in possession of the drugs for personal financial gain. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act — Sections 8(c), 20(b)(ii)(B), and 29. The accused was taken into custody, and further investigation is underway.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police (South) Shivajirao Rathod, DCP (Zone 1) Rishikesh Reddy, and ACP (Sonegaon Division) Ashok Shelke. The action team included PI Ajay Mankar, PSI Shivaji Borkar, and constables Ritesh Malgulwar, Sanjay Manaskar, Yogeshwar, and Mangesh.
