Concerned by the severe inconvenience caused to residents due to recent heavy rainfall in Nagpur, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has instructed officials to conduct an on-site, area-wise assessment and submit a detailed report within eight days.
The directive came during a high-level meeting held at Niyojan Bhavan in Sadar, where Gadkari and Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule reviewed infrastructure and development work across the district. Among those present were MLAs Krishna Khopde, Pravin Datke, and Charan Singh Thakur, along with District Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhary, NIT Chairman Sanjay Meena, and senior officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), PWD, MahaMetro, and other related departments.
Gadkari questioned officials over the flooding despite pre-monsoon claims of drain and water channel clearance. Officials responded that waterlogging occurred mainly in low-lying areas.
Expressing dissatisfaction, Gadkari pointed to the severe flooding in Besa-Beltarodi and Manish Nagar. He was informed that unauthorised constructions in Besa-Beltarodi were obstructing water flow, leading to residential flooding. The minister instructed authorities to demolish illegal structures and hold responsible officials accountable.
MLA Khopde highlighted flood-related issues in Pardi, while MLA Datke raised concerns about water seeping into metro stations. Gadkari stressed the need for field visits by officials to evaluate ground conditions firsthand.
In terms of infrastructure projects, Gadkari gave clearance for the Butibori-Umred road project under the Central Road Fund (CRF) and approved the detailed project report (DPR) for a proposed national highway route passing through Karanja, Loharisawanga, Bharshingi, Kharsoli, Narkhed, and extending to the Madhya Pradesh border.
Additionally, he approved the widening of the road in Kamptee to facilitate metro expansion, including the construction of Dragon Palace Metro Station and provisions for parking facilities at the site.
