In a push to tackle chronic drain choking in city slums, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has begun field trials of a “Spider Machine” — a specialized four-legged cleaning device designed for deep and narrow drains.
On Monday, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari personally inspected a trial run at Baba Faridnagar Nala on Koradi Road and Shakti Nala at Gaddigodam. These nalas have long posed a challenge due to accumulated silt and stagnant water, especially during monsoon. The Commissioner closely examined the performance and efficiency of the spider machine, which is being evaluated for wider deployment.
Dr. Chaudhari was accompanied by Additional Commissioner Vasumana Pant, Deputy Commissioners Rajesh Bhagat and Ashok Garate, Chief Sanitation Officer Dr. Gajendra Mahalle, and other senior officials.
The Spider Machine stands out for its 360-degree rotation, four-legged hydraulic support, and ability to operate in deep, water-filled drains where traditional machines fail. It can access confined spaces and maneuver freely, offering a potential breakthrough for cleaning small urban drains.
“Manual cleaning is risky and inefficient. This machine could change the game — if it performs,” said a senior official during the demo.
With drain overflows already affecting several low-lying areas, NMC is under pressure to act fast. The pilot could pave the way for city-wide mechanized drain cleaning, especially in vulnerable zones.
If successful, this machine might just become Nagpur’s newest weapon against urban flooding.
