After several days of hot and humid weather, Nagpur residents can expect some respite as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted active monsoon conditions in the coming days. The city is likely to receive fairly widespread rainfall until July 17, with scattered showers expected between July 18 and 21.
On Tuesday afternoon, heavy showers were reported in several parts of Nagpur city and its rural outskirts, while some areas remained dry. The IMD’s surface observatory at Sonegaon recorded 29 mm of rainfall for the district. Notably, southwest Nagpur experienced intense rainfall accompanied by thunder.
Dr. Rizwan Ahmed, scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Nagpur, stated, “Scattered rainfall was recorded on Tuesday, and similar weather is likely to continue from July 18 to 21. The sky will remain mostly cloudy, and the monsoonal environment is expected to persist.”
According to the IMD forecast:
July 16-17: Fairly widespread rainfall likely across Nagpur and the Vidarbha region.
July 18-21: Scattered rainfall with cloudy skies and occasional thunderstorm activity expected.
Temperature Outlook: Day temperatures will remain steady between 31°C and 33°C, while night temperatures will range from 25°C to 26°C.
Precautionary Advice & Monsoon Systems Update:
Although no official weather warnings have been issued for July 18 to 21, the IMD has advised residents to take precautions during thunderstorm activity. People are urged to stay indoors during lightning and avoid open areasand metallic objects.
At present, two low-pressure systems are influencing the monsoon:
- A depression over North Rajasthan, and
- A well-marked low-pressure area over North Jharkhand and adjoining South Bihar.
The Jharkhand system is drawing moisture from the Bay of Bengal, fueling the current rainfall across Vidarbha.
However, as these systems begin to move away, rainfall intensity is expected to decrease after July 17, though active monsoon conditions will persist.
