With ongoing redevelopment work causing mobility challenges at Nagpur Railway Station, a new e-wheelchair service has been launched to assist elderly, specially-abled, and injured passengers. The initiative aims to ensure safer and easier movement within the station premises. The service was officially introduced on Wednesday, with four motorised wheelchairs now available on demand.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) Aman Mittal confirmed the launch of the e-wheelchair service, stating that the initiative would ensure safer and more comfortable movement for passengers who need assistance. “Each e-wheelchair will be accompanied by an operator during the commute to help navigate the station,” he said.
The contract for the service has been awarded for three years, and each ride will be available at a fixed charge of ₹100.
According to a media report in local daily, the introduction of the e-wheelchair service comes in response to the growing challenges faced by passengers during the ongoing redevelopment work at Nagpur Railway Station.
There had been increasing demand for such a facility to assist elderly and specially-abled passengers, similar to services already available at other major railway stations across the country. With construction work limiting access and the battery-operated car service suspended since February, mobility within the station had become a major concern for vulnerable passengers.
Mittal also noted that the e-wheelchairs provide a safer alternative to the previously used battery-operated cars, which were discontinued after a serious safety incident.
In February, a battery car lost control when its driver suffered a medical emergency, crashing into several passengers and severely injuring one. The incident raised major safety concerns and led authorities to suspend the service.
To make the new facility easily accessible, the railway administration will put up signages at various points in the station displaying the contact numbers for booking the e-wheelchair service.
Passengers can also avail the service through the ‘Margdarshak Kiosk’ installed within the station premises.
