Nagpur: The Maharashtra State Government has granted final approval for allotting the land of the now-defunct Nagpur Nagarik Sahkari Hospital, located on North Ambazari Road, to Dr Abaji Thatte Seva Aur Anusandhan Sanstha. A multi- and super-specialty hospital is proposed to be developed on the premises.
The update was presented to the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court by the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT). In light of this development, the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Dr Bhalchandra Subhedar was dismissed by the division bench comprising Justice Nitin Sambre and Justice M A Nerlikar.
Previously, the court had directed that the land be allotted to an eligible charitable organisation within three months, following the closure of the cooperative hospital. NIT initiated a tender process, where Dr Abaji Thatte Sanstha emerged as the highest scorer with 95.10 out of 100 points. The NIT board approved the recommendation, which was subsequently sanctioned by the state government on May 29, 2025.
Key conditions set for the allotment include:
- The land must be exclusively used for a multi-super-specialty hospital.
- If unused for the stated purpose, it must be returned to NIT.
- Premium charges must be paid in accordance with NIT regulations.
The plot, measuring 62,888 sq ft, was repossessed by NIT in March 2024 after the original cooperative hospital ceased operations. A five-member medical expert panel also endorsed the proposal for constructing a hospital at the site.
Advocate Sudame represented the petitioner, while Advocate Girish Kunte appeared on behalf of NIT.
