Nagpur Cyber Police have registered an FIR against a social media user for allegedly making defamatory claims against the city’s traffic police. The person had posted a controversial comment on the official Instagram account started by Deputy Commissioner of Police Lohit Matani to gather citizens’ feedback on traffic issues.
The comment, posted on July 12 from the Instagram ID @399-9-98, stated: “traffic police avoid areas where signals are dysfunctional and do not take action against pubs and bars on Wardha Road operating late into the night,” hinting at possible bribe-taking.
According to police officials, the comment was seen as an attempt to harm the department’s public image. Based on a complaint filed by Constable Shivshankar Gadde, Cyber Police registered a case under Sections 58/25 and 356(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.
Police have confirmed that the identity of the accused has been traced through the Instagram handle.
