After a week of dry weather, the monsoon came back to Nagpur on Thursday with strong showers that lasted nearly two hours. Many parts of the city and nearby areas got drenched, causing waterlogging and traffic problems in several places.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Sonegaon recorded just 4 mm of rain, but that number didn’t match what people saw across the city. That’s because Sonegaon had lighter rain, while other areas like Indora Chowk, Automotive Square, Wadi, Jaripatka, Shanti Nagar, Vaishali Nagar, and near the Nagpur Railway Station saw heavy rainfall from around 11 am onwards.
People faced trouble moving around, especially in low-lying areas, as roads were flooded and traffic slowed down. The rains brought some relief from the heat but also showed how poorly the city is prepared for the monsoon.
With drains overflowing, many roads in Nagpur looked like small rivers. At the Wadi T-point, water entered the silencers of cars and two-wheelers, leaving several vehicles stuck and needing help to restart. In many areas, school and college students were seen walking through ankle-deep water, raising concerns about how the city handles flooding.
The area near the entrance of Nagpur Railway Station was also flooded. Although water didn’t get inside the station, ongoing upgrade work made it more difficult for passengers. Railway officials said the front approach road was under water, but civic teams responded quickly and cleared it within a few hours.
According to a media report, other districts in Vidarbha also received decent rain. Gondia recorded 23 mm, while rainfall was reported in Chandrapur, Bramhapuri, and Wardha. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said the monsoon will remain active in Nagpur and nearby areas till July 23, with chances of thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rain on some days.
Meanwhile, the difference in rainfall data has again brought up the issue of centralized weather reporting. Earlier this week, on July 15, Sonegaon and Khamla got 29 mm of rain while the rest of the city remained dry — a complete opposite of Thursday’s situation. Locals are now pushing again for more weather stations across the city to get accurate rainfall readings.
Experts and locals are now demanding more weather stations in different parts of Nagpur. They say this will help give a clearer and more accurate picture of local weather, especially as climate changes are becoming more unpredictable.
With more rain expected in the coming days, civic officials are on alert. People are advised to stay cautious, especially in areas that often get flooded.
