Nagpur: Acting on state government directives to curb noise pollution and address public grievances, the Nagpur Police have begun the removal of unauthorized loudspeakers from religious sites across the city. The move comes in line with instructions from the Home Ministry, mandating the removal of all loudspeakers not in compliance with the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules.
Police Commissioner Ravindra Singhal confirmed that the department is carrying out the operation in accordance with government orders, ensuring all religious establishments adhere to the guidelines.
The Bombay High Court, in a significant observation on Tuesday, acknowledged the “substantial and sincere efforts” made by the Maharashtra Government in tackling the issue of illegal loudspeakers at religious places. As a result, a division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne disposed of a 2018 contempt petition filed by activist Santosh Pachlag, which alleged non-compliance with the High Court’s 2016 order regulating the use of loudspeakers.
Citing an affidavit submitted by Maharashtra DGP Rashmi Shukla, the court noted that as of April this year, 2,812 loudspeakers were reported to be in use at various religious structures. Of these, 343 were removed, 831 received proper licenses, and 767 structures were served notices warning against exceeding permissible noise levels. Additionally, 19 FIRs were registered against violators.
Government pleader Neha Bhide informed the court that an Inspector General-level officer has been appointed as the nodal officer to oversee action against unauthorized audio systems.
“The authorities have shown a genuine effort in complying with the Court’s directions. No grounds for contempt remain,” the bench stated, officially dismissing the petition.
Further reinforcing the enforcement drive, the DGP’s office issued an order on April 11 directing strict action under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Act, 2000. Vendors have also been warned against supplying non-compliant sound equipment, with authorities vowing legal consequences for violations.
