Nagpur City Police have decided to step up their action against drunk driving, particularly around clubs and bars in the city. This move is part of their ongoing traffic drive, “Operation U-Turn,” launched on July 11 to curb road accidents caused by intoxicated driving.
According to a media report, many individuals visiting nightclubs and bars continue to risk driving under the influence of alcohol. To tackle this, the traffic police will now strengthen their presence near popular clubs and bars, especially in the Civil Lines area, which hosts a large number of such establishments.
Police have also begun identifying the routes commonly used by club-goers to reach home, allowing them to set up additional checkpoints to catch drunk drivers. So far, the number of offenders caught during the campaign has remained relatively low.
On July 11, the first day of the campaign, 48 drunk drivers were caught. However, the numbers declined in the following days. While the figures have remained steady, police suspect that many offenders are still managing to escape checks. To address this, they now plan to tighten surveillance near nightlife hotspots.
Another issue that emerged was the method of checking. Some traffic officers were not using breathalysers and were instead relying on smelling drivers’ breath—an unreliable method that can lead to errors.
Taking serious note of this, DCP Traffic Lohit Matani stated that all traffic personnel have now been strictly instructed to use breathalysers and not depend on smell alone. With these measures in place, police hope to catch more drunk drivers and improve road safety.
