In a bid to reduce road accidents and promote responsible driving, Nagpur City Police has ramped up enforcement under its special drive ‘Operation U-Turn’, targeting drunk drivers across the city.

The initiative, which began on July 11, focuses on curbing late-night drunk driving, especially around bars and nightclubs.
Between July 10 and July 18, the Traffic Department conducted intensified nakabandi operations across multiple traffic zones. During this 9-day period, police checked 1,339 vehicles and penalised 336 individuals for driving under the influence.

The Indora division recorded the highest number of offenders (71), followed by Sonegaon, Kamptee, and MIDC zones — each reporting over 40 violations. Additional action was taken in traffic zones including Sadar, Sitabuldi, Cotton Market, Lakadganj, Ajni, and Sakkardara.

Authorities revealed that a significant number of motorists continue to drive after consuming alcohol, particularly in high-traffic areas like Civil Lines, which houses many popular nightlife spots.
In response, police teams have started identifying key exit routes used by patrons and are deploying strategic checkpoints to intercept offenders before any mishap occurs.
Taking serious note of the situation, DCP (Traffic) Lohit Matani has instructed all field personnel to mandatorily use breathalysers to test suspected drunk drivers, rather than relying on breath odor. The move is aimed at ensuring accurate detection and reinforcing accountability on the roads.
Although the number of caught violators may appear modest, officials stress that the campaign has significantly increased police visibility and served as a strong deterrent, discouraging potential offenders from driving after drinking.
The traffic department has plans to intensify enforcement further, especially during weekends and late-night hours when such violations peak.
Nagpur Police has urged citizens to avoid drinking and driving, warning that strict legal action, including fines, license suspension, and possible criminal charges, will be taken under the Motor Vehicles Act.
