SMHRC Teamwork Turns Trauma into Triumph
In a recent medical feat, the 1020-bedded Shalinitai Meghe Hospital & Research Centre (SMHRC), Wanadongri, Nagpur, demonstrated exemplary clinical expertise and teamwork in saving the life of a 43-year-old male patient who sustained a life-threatening neck injury following a road traffic accident.
The patient, initially taken to another hospital, was promptly referred to SMHRC due to his deteriorating condition. He arrived at the Emergency Department in the early hours with a deep laceration on the left side of the neck, profuse bleeding, and signs of hypovolemic shock. His vitals were critically low: pulse 122/min, blood pressure 56/34 mmHg, and he was drowsy with ongoing active bleeding despite compression.
Recognizing the emergency, the on-call surgical team was swiftly mobilized. Following initial resuscitation, the patient was taken to the operation theatre at approximately 3:30 AM. Intraoperative findings revealed a transected external jugular vein, injury to the sternocleidomastoid muscle, and damage to a vertebral tributary of the left brachiocephalic vein. Immediate control of bleeding and repair of the injured structures were successfully accomplished, with intraoperative blood transfusions aiding in stabilization.
The case was managed by a dedicated multidisciplinary team comprising Dr. Pravin Nikhade (Professor), Dr. Suraj Kagwad and Dr. Danish Anees (Assistant Professors), and junior residents Dr. Gaurav, Dr. Simran, and Dr. Sandeep, under the supervision of Dr. Rajiv Sonarkar, HOD – Surgery. Anesthesia was administered by Dr. Rita Gupta, under the guidance of Dr. Anjali Borkar, HOD – Anesthesiology. Postoperative ICU management was provided by Dr. Hemant Deshpande, Dr. Rakesh Bhaisare, Dr. Rahul Daga, Dr. Amit Suthar, Dr. Anitabh Sukhdeve, Dr.Masum Biranjan and Dr. Samruddhi Tayade. Nursing care was led by Sr. Geeta Kubde, ANS, along with Sr. Shruti, Sr. Pritika, Sr. Jyoti, and Sr. Pooja, under the supervision of Dr. Seema Singh, Nursing Director.
Dr. Vasant Gawande, Chief Medical Superintendent, SMHRC, reported that the patient had an uneventful recovery and was discharged in a stable condition on the 7th postoperative day. He continues to recover well on follow-up.
Dr. Anup Marar, Director, DMIHER (DU) Off Campus, remarked, “This case highlights SMHRC’s prompt emergency response, surgical excellence, and unwavering commitment to delivering quality, affordable healthcare to the community.”
