Instances of fraudulent income tax return filings are surfacing during ongoing investigations by the Income Tax Department, said Ketan Saiya, Chairman of the Western India Regional Council (WIRC) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), on Saturday. He warned that if any Chartered Accountant (CA) is found involved in such malpractices, the Institute’s Disciplinary Committee—comprising a government-nominated member—will initiate strict and impartial action against the accused.
Saiya was in Nagpur to attend a seminar hosted by ICAI Nagpur Branch on the theme ‘Use of Artificial Intelligence in the CA Profession’. Speaking at a press briefing held at the ICAI office in Dhantoli, he highlighted several initiatives launched by WIRC for the welfare of CA students and members.
He mentioned that students belonging to families with an annual income below ₹5 lakh are eligible to receive a stipend of ₹1,500 per month through a ₹500 crore scholarship fund. Additionally, under the CA Benevolent Fund, family members of deceased CAs from economically weaker sections are being provided either ₹15,000 per month for two years or a one-time grant of ₹3 lakh.
Nagpur Branch Chairman CA Dinesh Rathi shared updates on the branch’s infrastructure development. He said the ICAI had acquired land in Besa back in 2010, and a modern facility is now in the pipeline. The tendering process for the project is currently in progress.
Other dignitaries present at the event included WIRC Vice Chairman CA Piyush Chandak, Treasurer CA Fenil Shah, Secretary CA Jeenal Savla, Regional Council Member CA Jitendra Sagalani, Nagpur Branch Vice Chairperson CA Swaroopa Wazalwar, Treasurer CA Tripti Bhattad, and Managing Committee Member CA Ankush Keshrwani.
