In a significant step towards modernising its public education system, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has rolled out Semi-English medium instruction for Class 1 students in most of its primary and secondary schools starting this academic year. The initiative aims to gradually extend the Semi-English curriculum to higher classes in the coming years, aligning with evolving educational standards and equipping students with better language and academic skills.
Until now, NMC-run schools largely offered education in Marathi, Hindi, or Urdu, a limitation that often left students at a disadvantage compared to those studying in private English-medium institutions. The newly introduced Semi-English medium is expected to bridge this gap and elevate the academic standing of NMC school students.
NMC operates 117 schools across ten zones in the city, including 100 primary and 17 secondary schools. These comprise 31 Marathi, 44 Hindi, 18 Urdu, and 7 English medium primary schools, while secondary education is offered in 7 Marathi, 5 Hindi, and 5 Urdu medium schools. Currently, only 11 NMC schools offer Semi-English education up to Class 10.
Speaking about the initiative, NMC Education Officer Sadhana Sayam said, “The syllabus for Class 1 in the Semi-English medium aligns closely with CBSE standards. This move will enable our students to compete confidently with those from private schools on a national level.”
While municipal corporations in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Aurangabad have already adopted Semi-English mediums and even established CBSE and ICSE board schools, NMC’s schools have remained affiliated solely to the State Secondary Education Board—until now. The introduction of Semi-English medium classes marks a pivotal transformation in this trend.
As per official data, a total of 14,637 students are currently enrolled in NMC schools—9,874 in primary and 4,763 in secondary sections. In a recent outreach effort, NMC officials and school teachers, along with Additional Municipal Commissioner Vaishnavi B, engaged directly with parents to encourage higher enrollment in civic schools.
This forward-looking reform is seen not just as a change in the medium of instruction, but as a strategic move to prepare NMC students for a globalized world. By aligning public education with national standards and enhancing language proficiency, the initiative is expected to create a more skilled, confident, and competitive generation of learners in Nagpur.
