Nagpur: Taking its anti-drunk driving campaign a notch higher, Nagpur Traffic Police have intensified enforcement under Operation U-Turn by deploying teams outside bars, nightclubs, and lounges to catch motorists under the influence before they hit city roads.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani said the move comes after police noticed a rising trend of partygoers driving drunk, especially in areas like Civil Lines and other nightlife hotspots, despite repeated warnings.
“To prevent accidents and ensure public safety, traffic teams have started monitoring key exit routes from popular clubs and bars across the city’s 10 zones. Strategic checkpoints are being set up to intercept intoxicated drivers before they can cause harm,” said DCP Matani.
Between July 10 and July 18, a total of 336 offenders were booked for drunk driving during Operation U-Turn, while 1,339 vehicles were checked across major traffic divisions. The highest number of violators were caught in Indora Division (71), followed by Sonegaon (42), and over 40 violators each from Kamptee and MIDC divisions. Other zones like Sitabuldi, Sadar, Cotton Market, Lakadganj, Ajni, and Sakkardara also saw significant action.
DCP Matani issued a stern warning that anyone caught driving under the influence will face strict legal action, including heavy fines, license suspension, and criminal charges as per the Motor Vehicles Act.
Appealing to citizens to act responsibly, he added, “We are not against celebrations or nightlife. But if you plan to drink, tag along a driver or book a cab. Don’t risk your life or someone else’s.”
With traffic cops keeping a close watch on nightlife zones, Nagpur’s party crowd has been urged to rethink how they get home — because one careless decision can cost more than just a fine.
