Dr Sameer Paltewar, one of the Directors of Meditrina Hospital, Ramdespeth, who has been booked for fraud and embezzlement, got a jolt on Wednesday when the court rejected his anticipatory bail plea.
The Sitabuldi police on January 23 had registered an offence against Dr Paltewar under sections 420, 406, 465, 467, 468, 471, 120(B) and 34 of Indian Penal Code for allegedly committing fraud and embezzlement of crores of rupees by availing benefits of government schemes illegally.
Dr Paltewar had then filed an anticipatory bill plea before the District and Session Court. The matter was heard by District and Sessions Judge Mr. Ali. During the two-hours of hearing, the prosecution strongly objected the bail application stating the accused has cheated the government and poor patients. Seeking his custody, the prosecution contended that it was a serious crime and needs thorough investigations. The accused might misuse the bail and hamper the investigations, the prosecution said.
The defence also argued strongly seeking the bail for Dr Paltewar. After hearing the two sides, the judge rejected the bail plea. Chief District Government Pleader; Nitin Telgote appeared for the State, while senior counsel Adv Avinash Gupta appeared for Dr Paltewar.
