The Special Crime Detection team and the staff of CCTV of Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested a mobile thief within 26 minutes of the incident at Nagpur Railway station on Thursday. The accused has been handed over to GRP, Nagpur.
According to reports, the complainant Sheikh Shaqeel Dastgir (37), a resident of Ramagundam, Telangana had come to the station to return to his native place along with his family. They then went to the waiting hall of Platform No 1 as there was time for their train to arrive. Sheikh put his mobile phone worth Rs 13,000 for charging and went to sleep.
Seeing Sheikh in a sound sleep, an unidentified person made his escape good with the mobile phone. On waking up at around 3.45 am Sheikh saw his phone missing and rushed to the RPF police station where lodged a complaint.
The Special Crime Detection team of RPF led by PSI S P Singh swung into action. Head Constable Iliyas Ansari and Rajeshwar Gupta, who were on duty at the CCTV room, checked the footage where they found a person stealing Sheikh’s phone. Head Constable Santosh Patel and Constable Nitesh Thamke while searching for the thief, noticed a suspicious person at the car parking area on the western side of the station. On questioning, he could not give satisfactory answers and was then brought to the RPF police station before PSI Singh.
On questioning by Singh, he told the police his name as Suraj Mahendra Yadav (28), a resident of Anantpur, Kota, Rajasthan. When asked about the mobile phone, he told the police that because his mobile phone was stolen, he decided to steal a phone and took away Sheikh’s phone while he was sleeping. The phone was recovered from him and handed over to the GRP on the orders of RPF Police Inspector V N Wankhede. The GRP has registered an offence under Section 379 of IPC.
