Narendra Nagar is becoming a big dumping yard along with other areas that are being neglected by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation authorities. A big stretch of around 1 km has been covered by polythene bags and other plastic items such as bottles and disposables leading to an unhealthy environment for the citizens.
Residents of Narendra Nagar had complained about the pile of garbage several times but there were no upgrades in the matter. The trash collectors are seen burning the collected garbage at the same spot where it is dumped even if it’s a residential area.
Such steps taken by the sanitation workers, is leading towards heavy air pollution and other respiratory problems due to toxic gasses that is released from the garbage.
Sometimes the garbage is burnt under the trees, which is another big issue, as the trees or the nests of birds might catch fire. It is already noticeable that the temperature in Nagpur city is at its peak level, and trees are the only escape for animals and birds from the scorching heat. Therefore, such human activity of burning the trash is slowly killing the flora and fauna of the city.
Sanitation condition is a serious issue to worry because the garbage piles collected near residential areas attracting flies and other insects which indirectly spread diseases; besides this the garbage is already having a pungent smell and if it is not removed quickly, it spreads bad smell all over the area.
The cattle and other animals like dogs, lumber through the garbage, trying to bite through polythene covers hoping to munch on rotten vegetables or kitchen refuse. In the process, many ingest the entire package plastic bags. The bits of plastic consumed build up in their internal organs, which make it difficult for cows to eat.
These conditions raise major questions like where the polythene bags are coming from when there is still a ban on imports, production and sale of plastic. Who is to be blamed for this?
