The much-awaited southwest monsoon has finally arrived in Vidarbha giving a much-needed respite to people from the blazing sun which left people sweltering for nearly two months. On Sunday the maximum temperature of Nagpur dipped by 3.4 notches to settle at 36.6 degrees Celsius.
Nagpurians woke up to a humid morning but as the day progressed the weather changed its colour too. Dark clouds surrounded the sky and a cold breeze made the atmosphere pleasant. In noon monsoon rains finally arrived, much to the delight of people, who were desperately waiting for rains.
Usually, monsoon gets active over Vidarbha in the first two weeks of June. However, this time it made an entry on June 22. Last year monsoon made an entry in the region on June 8 and during the season region received 875.4 mm rainfall which was 8 percent less than overall rainfall.
There was a prolonged dry spell in region. From June 1 to 22 region recorded scattered pre-monsoon showers. Bhandara received 95 percent less pre-monsoon showers followed by Nagpur-93 percent, Buldhana-91, Yavatmal-91, Amravati-85, Akola-85, Washim-88, Wardha-88,Chandrapur-75, Gadchiroli-79, and Gondia 87 percent.
On Saturday too many areas in the city recorded rains after monsoon entered in parts of Vidarbha region. The Orange city probably received the highest rainfall of this season on Saturday. In just about an hour between 1.10-2.20pm, Nagpur recorded 17.2 millimeters rains.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the southwest monsoon has advanced into parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha and is likely to cover the entire region in the next 48 hours.
Usually, the south-west monsoon enters from western Maharashtra. However, due to vayu cyclone this time monsoon lost its pace. Now thanks to the low-pressure area built up over the Bay of Bengal and coastal areas of Odisha monsoon is forwarding from east direction. So far, monsoon covered more than 90 percent parts of Chhattisgarh which created positive atmosphere for its advancement. It is expected that in next two to three days the rainy season will get momentum.
