ISA NCB in association with Department of Anesthesiology IGGMC, Nagpur held a CME on Deceased organ donation recently. Organ transplant can save thousands of lives, however there is a huge gap between demand and supply.
Around 4 lakh people die every year in India waiting for a transplant. There are several patients whose brain is irreversibly damaged who can be potential donors but just a few of them donate their organs owing to lot of myths and misconceptions.
Taking care of such patients is a big challenge. The outcome of multiple recipients hinges on the effective management of donor. Transplantation of human organs act was formulated in 1994. The CME was organized commemorating the act on its 25th anniversary.
Dr. Manisha Shembekar, President, ISA NCB in her welcome address said that since the deceased organ donation is gaining momentum in India, anaesthesiologists need to learn about the proper maintenance of the donor as he or she is the leader of the team. Dr. Ajay Keoliya, Dean IGGMC was the chief guest, Dr. Sandhya Manjrekar, Professor Anaesthesiology and Medical Superintendent also graced the occasion.
Dr. Vaishali Shelgaonkar, Professor Dept of Anaesthesiology conceptualized the idea and spoke on “Role of anaesthesiologist in organ donationâ€, Dr. Naresh Tirpude, Professor, Dept of Anaesthesia, GMC Nagpur deliverd a talk on “Identification and certification of brain stem deathâ€.
The legal aspects of transplant were discussed by Ms Jaya Jairam of MOHAN foundation. Dr. Vijay Shetty from Fortis Hospital, Mumbai spoke on “Organ maintenance and preparationâ€. Dr. Prakash Khetan, senior nephrologist told about dos and don’ts of kidney transplant, while surgeon’s perspective of Liver donation was told by Dr. Rahul Saxena. “Myths and misconceptions of skin donation†were discussed by Dr. Sameer Jahagirdar, plastic surgeon.
Dr. Abhijeet Kale told about current concepts in bone transplant. Dr. Vibhavari Dani, President ZTCC, discussed how untiring efforts of transplant co ordinators lead to successful outcome. The lectures were followed by a panel discussion on current scenario of organ transplant in India. Dr. Bhau Rajurkar, Dr. Shelgaonkar, Dr. Tirpude were the panelists and Dr. Kiran Vyawahare And Dr. Sarita Joglekar moderated the session. The program was conducted by Dr. Amrusha Chouksey and Dr. Vikas Chaudhary. Dr. Soma Cham, Hon. Secretary proposed a vote of thanks.
