The razing squad of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) returned empty handed after a strong protest from local residents who were protesting the demolition of dilapidated chawls of Model Mill. A large number of local residents gathered as soon as the NMC razing squad reached there at 11.30 am.
They protested the demolition bid, Chawl residents said that they had fought a long legal battle for homes for evacuated families. The high court had asked the builder to provide 225 square feet home to very family. It has been 16 years since then the concerned builder had not started the wok for constructing houses. Now, they want to evacuate the chawl on a notary paper.
On the other hand NMC wants to demolish it stating it a dilapidated building. Residents said that they themselves demolished the worn out portion of their homes. NMC’s Dhantoli zone officials said they were worried over the worn out structure of the building. It is a potentially dangerous building to live in. So the NMC wants to demolish it for the safety of the residents.
After a strong protest, the razing squad returned back at 1.30 pm giving some days time to residents. 177 families reside in the chawls. Since long 177 families reside in Model Mill chawls. They fought a long legal battle and HC had ordered the builder to provide then home first before demolishing the chawls. In the meantime, the building has become dilapidated.
