Nagpur Mayor Nanda Jichkar has appealed policy makers and city planners to give more emphasis to create public awareness for sustainable and low carbon mobility. She said, it is necessary to promote citizens for reducing green gas emission as increasing vehicular traffic is creating health hazard for them.  Mayor Nanda Jichkar was addressing an inaugural session of a two day workshop on Sustainable and Low Carbon Urban Mobility organised by AFD, European Union under its Mobilize Your City (MYC) initiative in collaboration with Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation, Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Urban Mass Transit Company Limited UMTC, at Hotel Tuli Imperial on Monday. The workshop will conclude on July 23 at 4 pm.
Adding further Mayor Nanda Jichkar said, Nagpur is ahead in taking several initiatives in Smart City under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister for Road Transport Nitin Gadkari. She said, the public transport should be available on affordable price so that maximum people can use it. The authorities should reach to the non- government organisations and citizens to give them information about initiatives taken by the Central and State governments for their benefits.
Dr Ramnath Sonwane, Chief Executive officer of Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited while addressing the participants said Nagpur has been selected by European Union under Mobilize Your City. Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited is implementing this prestigious project in orange city. Emphasizing on reduction of green gas emission Dr Sonawane said, now people are aware about pollution and they are ready to adopt changes. Central Government has taken several initiatives to promote environment friendly clean energy vehicles. After some years, the fossils fuel based vehicles will be thing of past. The western countries have changed traditional vehicles to save environment. He appealed city planners to work as ambassadors of eco- friendly environment and create awareness among the citizens.
Ajay Kumar, an expert of Urban Mass Transit Company Limited said that the authorities should discourage citizens to use private vehicles. The vehicular population is increasing in the city. This is affecting the health and wealth of the citizens.
S Ramakrishnan, an international expert of Urban Transport discussed about pertaining problems of public transport system in Nagpur. He said, Nagpur is ahead in preparing master plan for public transport. Presently, only 9 % commuters are using public transport in Nagpur. He also emphasized need for integration of all transport system to ensure last mile connectivity.
Dr Udit Jain and Dr Ankit Kathuria of VNIT gave presentation of intersection of city roads. They said the intersections of roads are required to be designed for pedestrians and cyclists. Mahesh Gupta, Joint General Manager (Mobility) of Maha Metro gave presentation about multi modal integration proposed by Nagpur Metro.
Arun Kumar, Project Director of Grant Thornton gave details of Smart City initiatives in smart and green fuel transport.
Rajnish Ahuja, Project Manager Urban Transport of AFD, Jatin Arora, Grants Manager AFD, Mahesh Morone, Dy CEO of Nagpur Smart City, Vijay Banginwar, Rajesh Dufare, Devendra Mahajan, Uday Ghiye, Leena Budhe, Kaustubh Chatterjee, Surabhi Jaiswal, and Subhash Singla were present. Mrs Jaishree Jindal, National Coordinator of Mobilize Your City and Nivesh Modi, Nagpur City Coordinator of Mobilize Your City worked hard for the success of the event.
