The orientation programme for the fifth batch of Post Graduate Programme (PGP) students (2019-21) at Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur got underway on Wednesday.
All 122 future management gurus were welcomed at the onset of programme, which enabled students to immerse in the ‘IIMN Environment’ and prepared them for
upcoming two years at the Institute.
The orientation programme included sessions on PGP policy, Career Development Services, special need-based scholarships, library, health center and various facilities available for the students at IIM Nagpur.
The orientation programme included exclusive sessions that familiarized students with the culture of the Institute and acquainted them with issues of utmost importance, such as ethics and gender sensitivity. Being a management school, IIM Nagpur emphasizes on students’ ability to analyze and take decisions in business situations that arise in real life. The case analysis approach places students at the centre of management problems and provide an environment where students learn managerial decision making. With this in mind, special sessions were conducted to introduce the students to the case pedagogy. The sessions involved detailed discussion on approaches in preparing a case, discussion in the class and analysis of the case.
The students also had an interactive session with ten alumni of IIM Nagpur who are currently working in different sectors in the industry. The alumni shared their experience at IIM Nagpur and the industry with the incoming batch. The orientation programme also involved a theatre-based workshop, ‘Right from the start’.
The workshop underlined the role of self-reflection to make the students’ IIMN journey
enriching. In addition to this, to hone their individual and team skills and to illustrate learn by doing, the students took part in a full-day outbound programme. The outbound programme involved various group activities and capitalized on experiential learning to put across relevant lessons such as the importance of teamwork in management and impact of synergistic approach.
IIM Nagpur emphasizes the need to look at problems from the societal perspective and endeavours to enable its students to understand real-life issues and possess skills to provide innovative solutions for the benefit of the society.
A visit to Slum Soccer was organized as a part of community outreach to understand the exemplary transformation process initiated by the organisation. Slum Soccer is an organization that aims to improve living standards and opportunities for the homeless and the underprivileged through the medium of football. Students interacted and played soccer and many other games with Team Slum Soccer. The visit gave the students an insight into the unique and commendable transformation process by the organization.
As future managers, the visit helped them connect with some real issues in society and the efforts made to overcome them.
Preparatory Programme:
Typically, the Post Graduate Programme at IIM Nagpur has a mix of fresh graduates and students with industry experience. In order to maintain the academic rigor required during the two-year programme, a preparatory programme was conducted from July 01, 2019 to July 05, 2019. There were two phases of preparatory programme- online and in-class sessions.
Online courses from Harvard Business School were provided to all the students before they arrived on the campus. Topics such as quantitative methods, financial accounting and spreadsheets were covered by the HBS online courses to refresh the concepts earlier learned by the students.
To further enhance the student learning, immersive in-class sessions were organized. During the in-class sessions, various prerequisite tools and techniques that are relevant for the next two years of coursework at IIM Nagpur were discussed. The role of thinking approach and conversion of
real-life problems to analyzable form was emphasized during these sessions. These serve to refresh the concepts applied by students with work experience earlier in their workplaces, in addition to providing freshers with a solid foundation for a more advanced curriculum. It is expected that the preparatory programme would improve the effectiveness of the students’ learning experience during the Post Graduate Programme
