-Grahak panchayat demands strict action
Illegal meat is being sold on footpaths by encroachers and chicken and goats are slaughtered on the roads while the NMC zonal officers and veterinary officials have taken on the role of observers. The health of the citizens is in danger because the officials do not take any action. Strict action has been demanded against them by Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat Vidarbha Prant Sanghatanmantri Gajanan Pande to the collector and NMC commissioner.
The Panchayat office-bearers had raised this issue in the district consumer protection conference. Illegal meat shops have been put up blatantly at many footpaths and roads in the city. As per law, chicken and goats cannot be slaughtered on the road but the rules are flouted.
Also, the offal is thrown on the road, which is picked by dogs and cats and littered in surrounding localities. This causes a stink and trouble to the residents. These facts were shown to the officials but no action is being taken and there is anger, Pande said.
Vendors have encroached on all footpaths, meant for pedestrians. The encroachments should be removed and senior citizens, women, students, and disabled persons should be allowed to walk freely. The Panchayat has surveyed 40 encroached roads and given the list to the administration regularly.
As the footpaths have encroached, pedestrians are forced to walk on the roads and accidents occur many times. Panchayat has demanded strict action on this issue.
All roads and footpaths in all NMC zones have encroached. The concerned officials see this but deliberately neglect it. Do they have any deals with the encroachers? The Panchayat asked.
NMC zone officials should be held responsible for the encroachments and action should be taken against them demanded Panchayat president Adv Smita Deshpande, Sanjay Dharmadhikari, Dr Narayan Mehere, Sandhya Punayani, Ganesh Shirole, Pravin Sharma, Dattaraya Kathale and Anirudh Gupte.
