The National Fire Service College at Nagpur was established in 1956 to offer technical training for all fire officers of the country in order to build skills, develop capacity and improve standards of performance within the first responders.
It began by organizing training for fire professionals already in service at state / municipality / public sector industries in the form of sub fire officer’s course, station officers and instructors course and divisional officers course so as to enable the officers to handle higher responsibility at each level.
Moreover, in 1978 the college also started a BE (Fire Engineering) course for training students and creating a resource of engineers to support the high fire risk operations of urban areas as well as Industries. Presently, 60 students undertake the course of study every year after selection on JEE ranking and a medical test. The batch to pass out in 2019 has achieved 100% placement with pay packages reaching up to 16 lakhs per annum.
In the times to come, with rapid development being undertaken in the country, the risk of fire hazards will grow in higher proportions needing capable professionals to handle the emergencies efficiently. There is a huge shortage of fire officers at all levels and the requirements as recommended by the National Building Code and the Standing Fire Advisory Council is yet to be achieved.
Therefore, more students must opt for a career in the fire services and be part of the India’s success story. Presently, all the 60 seats at NFSC have been taken by bright students who passed their Std XII this year.
