International bids for the supply of coaches for Pune Metro has been won by Titagarh Firema a subsidiary of an Indian Company. They will supply 102 ultramodern state-of-the-art aluminum-bodied coaches. 25% of the coaches will be manufactured at their plant in Italy and balance 75% will be produced and commissioned at Maha Metro Coach Manufacturing Plant at Nagpur.
This will be for the first time that aluminum-bodied coaches will be manufactured in India. So far, stainless steel-bodied coaches are being used by the various metros in India. Aluminum body coaches being lighter, are more energy-efficient and have better aesthetics. Manufacturing of these new generation coaches will be a game-changer in the Indian metros.
The proposal to use aluminum body coaches has been highly appreciated by Durga Shankar Mishra, Secretary Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, GOI. In his tweet Mishra publicly acknowledge the special efforts being taken by Maha Metro in this direction.
Initially trains in Pune Metro will be of 3 coaches which will be subsequently converted into 6 coaches as per traffic requirement. These coaches will be fully air-conditioned with humidity control provided with the digital route and station display and interiors of international standards. They will have 100% CCTV coverage.
Will have emergency/panic button to ensure the safety of the passengers. Passengers will be able to speak to Train Operator on board as well as to Emergency Control at OCC if required. Physically challenged passengers can travel seamlessly to/ from the station entrance to the train with specially earmarked places for the wheelchairs. Mobile and laptop charging facility will also be provided onboard. Coaches will be ergonomically and aerodynamically designed with the coach exterior to reflect, history culture heritage of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad areas. Coaches will be fit for the maximum speed of 95 Kmph and will have the capacity to accommodate over 925 passengers. They are energy efficient and will be equipped with a regenerative braking system. They will also be capable of operations in driverless mode, however, Pune Metro’s operations will be with drivers/operators.
Operations of Pune are proposed to initially start with coaches being used by Maha Metro at Nagpur Metro which will be augmented, as and when the coaches for the new contract join the fleet.
MD/Maha Metro stated that with the order for coach procurement, Pune Metro Project has crossed one more important milestone and moving fast towards initial commissioning and completion in the service of citizens of Pune with best in class quality.
