The members of the Save Merit Save Nation (SMSN) movement will be going on a hunger strike from August 19 to 24 at Samvidhan Square, between 11 am and 6 pm daily.
The chain hunger strike has been organized as a part of the demand to end excessive reservation leading to dilution of merit and thus affecting national growth.
More than 62 General category communities and groups of SMSN movement have expressed concern over reducing the number of seats for General category students from the school, colleges, and jobs.
SMSN activists have demanded the Government to follow reservation cap in education and jobs fixed at 50 percent by the Supreme Court. The objective behind this strike is to eradicate the caste-based reservation system from the country and to promote equality in the opportunity to all as stated in the Constitution and advocated by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.
SMSN has been organising protest rallies, dharnas, ‘Ghantanaad’ agitations across the State. However, no appropriate measures have been taken yet on the issue of reservations over the Supreme Court capping of 52 percent.
The press release stated that an ‘alarming situation’ had arisen in Maharashtra due to an increase in the percentage of the reservation to 74 percent.
SMSN has urged all the concerned citizens to participate in the chain hunger strike and visit the dharna site to show solidarity to this cause.
