The activities of National Cadet Corps (NCC) have not expanded as desired in the Nagpur division over the last 25 years. This despite the fact that every year number of new schools increased. In the 135 schools of the division, there are 9700 NCC cadets. Among these  6200 are boys while girls cadets are 3500. The division has more than 3500 schools. There are 4.5 lakh students in Std VIII and IX. Most of them are city based schools while rural schools have never taken any initiative  to start NCC.
Sources said, fund crunch is the main reason behind this poor state of NCC in Nagpur division. The government does not have money for the expansion. Currently, government bears the cost of NCC uniforms and the camps organised for the training. Further the schools of the division be it government, aided or unaided do not have the ground a d building required to start NCC activities as per the NCC directorate registration parameters.
Aided schools’ directors have been showing no interest to start NCC in their schools. In the last five years, the numbers of aided schools have increased significantly. Private schools are reluctant to start NCC as they have not appointed permanent teachers. It is mandatory to have permanent teacher to start NCC activities.
The motto of the NCC is duty, unity and discipline. It drives for character building, brotherhood feeling, discipline, secularism, attitude of bravery and selfless service. The cadets are prepared in such a way that they should lead the society and encouraged to join the Army. Now, the moot question is how could the youths get encouragement to join armed forces. However, the education department, is least interested in promoting it. Sources from the education department stated that it is up to the schools to decide about NCC enrollment of students.
