The 32nd edition of Police Sports Championships began at Shivaji Stadium, Police Headquarters, Katol Road on Tuesday.
The event started with a volleyball match between Headquarters and Other Department, in which the latter defeated Headquarters Department 25-20, 20-25 and 19-17.
Other departments had a good start in the first game but HQD made a strong come back in the following game. In the third game, Other Department players got their rhythm back to win the inaugural match.
Mayur Meshram, Amit Parketi played exceptionally well for the winning team. For Headquarters Department Pritesh Deshpande and Sudhir played well but failed to seal the win for their team.
The three-day meet would conclude on August 29. Four police teams – Headquarters, North region, South region and Other are taking part in the tournament.
As many as 160 police department officials and employees are taking part. Players would be selected for the Maharashtra State Police Sports Meet to be held in Nashik on the basis of performance in this tournament.
Various events would be played during the three day meet. This included football, hockey, kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball, handball, boxing, wrestling, and athletics.
Earlier during the inaugural ceremony, Commissioner of Police Dr Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay urged the national level players in the police department to make an impression at the international level.
“There are many players in the police department who have left their mark in State-level tournaments. Now, its time you should shine at the international level as well,†he said while addressing the sportspersons.
Additional police commissioner (crime branch) Nilesh Bharne, the additional police commissioner (south) DG Gaikar, the additional police commissioner (north) Â Shashikant Mahakalkar, and others were present. Deputy commissioner of police Vikram Sali delivered a welcome address and proposed a vote of thanks.
