Around 250 jawans of the Maharashtra Suraksha Bal (MSF) staged a parade in the Government Medical College and Hospital (Medical) area on Friday as a deterrent against the rising number of attacks on interns and employees, touts of private pathology laboratories etc which have raised the question of security.
Last week an intern was robbed of cash by an unidentified person while the next day, a Medical employee was beaten by drunks in a slum when he asked them to stop their mischief. Touts of private pathological laboratories were observed moving through Medical and the security personnel were viewed with suspicion.
Security of Medical has been entrusted to MSF and private security company Unity. MSF work is better than Unity and MSF guards have shown their alertness in rushing during attacks on doctors, finding lost luggage, lost children, frisking patients and relatives etc which has
become a deterrent to anti-social elements.
On the other hand, the work of Unity’s guards in nothing beyond standing. However, due to some untoward incidents in the hospital, MSF jawans are being held responsible. Taking cognizance of this, MSF joint director Jagdev Akhare directed the parade of 250 jawans in the presence of MARD president Dr. Mukul Deshpande. Senior security officials Kishore Padvi, Ramesh Tayade, Balu Kamble, Deelip Nikalje and others were present. Officials gave instructions on factors to be considered while doing their duty, facing difficulties, maintaining peace, etc.
MARD had demanded an increase in security guards about four years back. The security audit committee, in its report, had recommended an additional 896 guards in 15 Government Medical College and Hospitals. The recommendation of the additional guards includes 152 in Medical and 44 in Mayo. Later it was ignored.
