Prayaas, the social club of VNIT is organizing a week-long campaign named Joy of Giving week scheduled from 28th September to 6th October 2019. It is an annual festival celebrated in association with Goonj, a Delhi based NGO founded by Mr. Anshu Gupta (a Raman Magsaysay Awardee). Prayaas has collaborated with the VNIT-Alumni Association, IOCL, Rotary Club of Nagpur and Rotary MIHAN to widen the scale of the event for this noble cause.
It provides a great platform for everyone to lend their supporting hands by donating quality reusable items such as clothes, blankets, newspapers, stationery, groceries, medicines, etc at the kiosks set up at 29 centers across Nagpur. Under “GOONJ KEE GULLAKâ€, monetary funds would also be accepted. At the end of the week, they send the quality material to GOONJ, where the same is recycled and sorted into 3 categories named Family kit, school kit and Dignity kit(mainly for women).
Goonj is a nationwide movement that operates in 21 to 28 states with 150 partners which includes the Indian army, a radio station, and grassroots groups and schools. It does not help people on charity but on the basis of the dignity of labour. Anshu Gupta believes in hard-earned rewards and so he makes people work for rural development and rewards them with his products.
They generate funds for self-sustainability by various fundraising activities like sale of old newspapers, one rupee one cloth and through sale of products from recycled material or sponsorships.
People of Goonj have been trying their level best to turn waste into a resource, charity into development while keeping in view that the self-respect of a needy person is not violated. Prayaas has started with a group of 10 members in September 2006 and has now grown to 150 under the guidance of the professors in-charge Dr.Dilip Peshwe and Dr.G.N.Nimbarte with their motto being “One Can’t help everyone but everyone can help someoneâ€. Their regular activities include Teaching in Municipal Schools, conducting a blood donation drive twice a year, conducting the Science Exhibition for school students of Nagpur, etc.
