Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur inaugurated the AICTE-QIP-PG Certificate Programme in Data Science (DS) and Data Analytics (DA) for Conventional Engineering Disciplines on July 1, 2025, at the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The program witnessed an overwhelming response, with 222 applications received from across India. After a rigorous screening process, only 50 participants—all regular faculty members from AICTE-approved institutions in core engineering fields—were selected for this prestigious 6-month hybrid programme.
This innovative and interdisciplinary course aims to equip engineering faculty with cutting-edge tools and techniques in data science and analytics, enabling them to apply these skills within their traditional engineering domains. The curriculum carries 18 academic credits and includes both theory and practical components, designed to bridge the gap between conventional engineering approaches and modern, data-driven decision-making.
Collaboration with leading academic institutions like IITs, NITs, and international universities, along with partnerships with industry leaders, is envisioned to further enrich the programme. These collaborations will bring domain-specific expertise, access to real-world datasets, practical insights, and potential internship opportunities, significantly enhancing the learning experience.
The inaugural function was graced by Prof. Prem Lal Patel, Director, VNIT, who appreciated the efforts of the coordinators in designing and launching such a forward-looking and impactful programme for faculty development. He emphasized the utility of credits earned through this course and their role in enhancing academic and research capabilities.
The session began with a warm welcome and guest introduction by Dr. Mangesh Kotambkar, followed by a course overview presented by Dr. Nitin Kumar Lautre, Programme Coordinator. Prof. A. B. Andhare, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, introduced the department and highlighted its evolving role in interdisciplinary education. The program is being coordinated by Dr. Nitin Kumar Lautre and Dr. Ravindra V. Taiwade.
The function concluded with the National Anthem, marking the beginning of a transformative learning journey for the selected participants.
