The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore has announced that it will undertake a detailed case study on teenage cricket sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, whose extraordinary performances have made him one of the most talked-about young athletes in the country.
The study will examine key aspects of elite sporting success, including talent identification, discipline, mental resilience, performance under pressure and the long-term development of young athletes. Suryavanshi grabbed national attention during IPL 2026, where he delivered a record-breaking season and walked away with five major awards.
IIM Indore Director Himanshu Rai said the youngster’s journey represents much more than individual sporting achievement and highlights the broader support system required to nurture exceptional talent. According to Rai, the research will bring together experts from sports management, behavioural science and leadership studies to understand how early success influences an athlete’s mindset, decision-making abilities and future ambitions.
He stated, “Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s narrative transcends mere cricket performance. It serves as a vital case study in human potential, talent development, discipline, mental resilience, and the quest for sustained excellence. At just 15, his confidence, skill, and poise on both national and international platforms illustrate that extraordinary talent, when paired with the right environment and guidance, can yield exceptional results. His journey underscores that significant accomplishments are seldom the product of individual talent alone.”
Rai further stressed that the study would explore how early achievements shape the thinking, confidence and long-term goals of high-performing youngsters. He noted that success at a young age often depends on multiple factors beyond natural ability.
He added, “The backing of family, coaches, and institutions, along with years of hard work, is crucial in fostering excellence. Thus, nurturing talent, supporting mental health, maintaining emotional stability, and ensuring long-term growth should be prioritized alongside celebrating achievements. IIM Indore will conduct a thorough, multidisciplinary study to investigate the social, psychological, familial, and institutional elements that significantly influence high-performing young talents.”
Suryavanshi enjoyed a historic IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals, dominating the tournament and collecting the Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player of the Season, Super Striker of the Season, Orange Cap and Super Sixes of the Season awards.
The Bihar-born batter finished as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.30. His explosive batting included a record 72 sixes, helping him rewrite several IPL records and cement his status as one of Indian cricket’s brightest young stars.
At just 15 years and 65 days old, Suryavanshi became the youngest player ever to win the Orange Cap, surpassing the previous record set by Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudharsan, who achieved the feat at 23 years and 231 days in 2025.
He also came within touching distance of equalling Virat Kohli’s record of four centuries in a single IPL season. Apart from his century against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Suryavanshi was dismissed in the nineties on three occasions—93 against Lucknow Super Giants, 97 in the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad and 96 in Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans.
Adding another milestone to his remarkable season, Suryavanshi became the fastest batter to reach 1,000 IPL runs in terms of balls faced, requiring only 440 deliveries and surpassing West Indies star Andre Russell. In terms of innings played, he became the second-fastest player to the landmark, reaching it in 23 innings, behind only Shaun Marsh, who achieved the feat in 21 innings.
